What the people who told you that forgot, or didn't even know, is that gay culture is much more than twinks and muscle sluts. There are the bears, the chubby chasers, BDSM lifestylers, and so on, all of which either are large people by default or very accepting of them. My hangups in furry were never really my weight, which is an issue for many people, but my age. Then I met people older than me active in the fandom encouraging me to be active.
