Quick Question!

by
How long are you usually ok to wait for a commission? And I know that would vary depending on the size of the commission so lets say something 2 characters medium details? :v

This could also be considered like when do you ask for progress on a commission.

Dont mistake it with how long have you waited so far for a commish, I'm more interested in knowing how long is ppl are whiling to wait, cuz I'v seen some artists take like 20 commissions or more and just slowly go thru them o3o and maybe their costumers are used to that.. Anyway, I made a poll cuz I like polls :P and so you folks can remain anonymous but if you thing you have more to say than an x number answer then sure just comment.

thats a question with tons of variables. How often have I done business wih the artist?how reliable have they been in general? Do they have any public lists showing their queue updated often? I would say as a default ,I would give an artist a month before I expected some sort of update for a picture like that. But realisticly speaking they could have a picture like that done in a few hours based on streams and art gotten at conventions before. So it all depends on circumstances. If they have no other obligations on their list I could see poking back at them after a week

I know someone who waited years on a commission, and while that may be a bit excessive, as long as I can trust that it will actually get done, I don't mind waiting a few months.

It depends, really.

How busy do I think the artist is? If I know it's somebody really popular then I know I can expect a longer time. If it's a new artist that's trying to get established and still has very few watchers, I'll expect to hear from them faster.

What is the quality they normally produce? If it's something really intricate, I know that takes longer.

How visible is their progress? If they stream, send partial results like sketches, or have a public queue, I'll probably ask much less, if I can see them working through it.

In general I would say I'd like to see at least a rough sketch in a week or so, and after two I will probably ask. I also have a tendency to poke everyone who owes me a commission at once, so sometimes an artist might get a message faster than usual.

I certainly want anything intended for a specific date like Halloween on time, but I try to ask for those at the very least a few weeks in advance.

I like to at least here something within two weeks, not finished or even started. Just touching base. I got a YCH from

not that I mind taking a month or longer, but communication is key. I'm doing my 4rth commission with an artist who takes4-5 weeks. amazing stuff, he sends me updates and just gets my feedback.

For most of the artists I've worked with, about a month is the average. The best ones still take that long, or sometimes longer, but keep the communication open with weekly updates, even if that update is 'didn't get anything done this week'. It at the very least lets the customer know that they haven't been forgotten, or taken advantage of, and goes a LONG way in keeping them satisfied if the wait gets to be longer than expected.

Wow, one month?! And to think that I often feel guilty when I take one week to deliver my works... ^^;
Although, on the other hand, some arts can be very complex or detailed if people accept this waiting time. In that case, I think it might be reasonable

Based on the hundreds of commissions I've gotten over the last couple decades, the mode average for completion is 10 days, and very few artists take more than a month.  I've found that setting a deadline during negotiation makes no difference, but if an artist says the art may take "a while", that implies they don't have a realistic schedule.  In that case, I'll proceed cautiously, and state that a couple months is the longest I'm willing to wait.

Most artists in the fandom do commissions on top of school or a "real" job, so I tend to cut them a lot of slack.

Still, the artists that take more than a few weeks tend to take a REALLY long time (in some cases, years), so I tend to prod for an update after 3 weeks, and start to get aggressive and thinking about a refund after 2 months.  There's a reason why PayPal and other services use 90 days as the limit to file a dispute.  It tends to be a realistic limit for freelance and small business deals.

These days, if an artist doesn't get something done before 3 months, I demand a full refund, and if they completed a sketch, I'll negotiate a partial refund rather than wait.  Less than 2% of artists end up causing a problem, so I'm pretty quick to take what I can get and forget about it.

My experience is much the same, either it's within a month or it might take a very long time. I usually follow the artists I commission and if there's a journal about problems, I know I'll have to wait. I have never asked for a refund, once three months have passed I've usually forgotten about it myself and it's a happy surprise when (if) the completed art apppears in my PMs.

There are a couple of artists that keep fairly deep queues but do maintain the flow, so it might regularly be more like two months with them. But they are the exceptions.

I don't mind waiting an indefinite length of time - as long as the artist touches base with a short message.  I totally understand stuff like "omg life totally got in the way, I'm working my way to you in the queue, it might take a couple weeks" or "I'm absolutely slammed, kinda bit off more than I could chew, you're like..6 weeks behind in queue".

All I'll say is "excellent, thanks for staying in touch, drop me another message in a couple weeks or so?"  I know the situation, I know where I stand, that's awesome.

If I'm *ghosted* for 2-3 weeks, then I get antsy and send DM's/emails (polite ones!!) just asking what's up, you ok, everything going well.  I've never had any issues with length of time for a commish.  ^^

(as expressed by others above) The biggest thing for me is communication.  I understand life issues and art block and all that.  But I don't want to feel like an asshole asking for a progress update after a significant time period has passed.  I never want to pester and artist or cause stress.  But I also don't want to throw money into a void.    Also, I know sometimes commissions can get lost, so I feel like I need to ask sometimes, but again... I don't want to feel like I'm being an asshole.

What makes it a little bit worse is the only artists I'll pester repeatedly are the ones I really love and really want art from.  If I do a random YCH and the preson disappears, I might send one note asking what's up... then maybe another a little bit later... but then I just leave it up to the fates.  But if I paid a lot of money and/or the artist is one I really love, I really want to pester them until I get what I paid for and that makes me feel extra shitty.

I am often to patient for my own good really. there have been times I have waited super super long before I even remember it. But I do often say the best things come to those who wait. But sometimes I will poke the artist just to see how they are doing but I really just let them do what they need to and I know my self that life can take over.

My limits usually two months. I have one right now that’s taken four but sometimes I’m willing to be more flexible when... well In this case it’s a slow artist that is very transparent about how slow they are.

It depends. Good that you mention how artists take dozens of commissions. Those usually have a public list and you can assume by their post frequency about how long it takes. In those case I'd of course never ask for progress etc. since it's clear obviously. Have waited two months and longer in such cases for the first wip.

It's a different story when it's with artists who don't have any public list and very infrequent posts. Usually I poke them after about 3 weeks in this case if they haven't named me how many customers are ahead of me or so.

That all refers to just communication of course. Luckily so far it happened only three times (in maybe 100 commissions) that an artist postponed me repeatedly or took so long to the point that it got annoying (one delivered after exactly 6 months which odly enough was their max time specified in their TOS q_q').
