after discovering the use of tcpdump i discovered the URL requested by WLU. its arkaid.duckdns.org.
If using a system with editable hosts file add...
0.0.0.0 arkaid.duckdns.org
to your hosts and the game should leap past "updating" and let ya play. it did for me [GentooLinux]
previously i used
uname -r -n <path/to/wildlife.x86_64>
but i dont like programs nosing into /root.
