A Review of FNaF: Security Breach

With it being out for a bit, I think it's time to give my thoughts on the newest FNaF title Security Breach. I'm not going to give away any major spoilers, but will talk about some parts of the game and my opinion on them.

First off is the plot: You play as a young boy named Gregory whom, with the help of the animatronic Glamrock Freddy, has to survive a night within Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex after being locked in. To survive the night, you have to avoid running into the rest of Freddy's crew who are acting strange, a night shift security guard by the name of Vanessa; and a mysterious creepy looking bunny fursuiter called Vanny. Along the way you get to explore various areas of the Mega Pizzaplex and come across things to help you fend of the other animatronics, helpful upgrades, and various little goodies and notes.

Next is game play: unlike traditional FNaF titles of the past where you are just confined to an area, the player is allowed to explore and take in the environment of the setting. However some areas are closed off to the player, and you have to fetch mcguffins like passes and security badges to open up new sections. Some areas are even closed off to the player unless you get certain things to upgrade Freddy. Plus you can hop inside Freddy and take him for a spin... Granted if he has enough juice in his battery, which you can recharge by hoping into a recharge station if one is close by.

OK, now that I talked about plot and gameplay; it's time to talk the flaws that Security Breach has...

When it comes to the plot of the game, it's sadly full of holes. For one, there is nothing in the plot that tells the player as to who exactly is Gregory, why is he in the Mega Pizza, why he's trying to hide from Vanessa; or why Vanny is after him. The plot of both Vanny and Vanessa is also lacking as well, with some stuff that is present in the game to be rather vague and convoluted. This has caused many YouTubers like MatPat, Super Horror Bros, Top 10 Gaming, and several others to concoct wild theories such as Gregory being an animatronic. It's not with the human characters either. In Security Breach there is an area of the Mega Pizzaplex that is focused around Bonnie, however he isn't in the game. Freddy gives dialog that alludes that Bonnie was once in the Mega Pizzaplex, but was for some reason taken out.

Then there is the game play. For looking real nice with lots of places to explore, the main storyline of Security Breach is actually kinda short. In fact by the time you get the second upgrade for Freddy, the time on the clock is almost 6am. After that, you are given the choice to leave the Mega Pizzaplex, confront Vanny if you managed to find her hideout, or stay and explore more. Choosing the stay option then puts you into some hardcore mode that prevents you from saving. There isn't a night 2, nor nights 3, 4, or 5. Despite being a FNaF game, Security Breach happens in one night. Also despite doing the stay option and exploring more of the Mega Pizzaplex, there are areas that require a Lv 10 security clearance to open. This is a problem because as of right now, there is no way to obtain a security clearance of Lv 10.

Then of course there is the issues with bugs, glitches, and frame rate. Security Breach has so many glitches and bugs in it atm, that some of them can even halt player progress by making animatronics freeze right next to a hiding spot, make an animatronic teleport out of nowhere and make you game over, or even softlock your game. Sometimes this soft lock issue can happen right near the beginning of the game. Also the frame rate can sometimes drop to a pretty low level, and it happens on both PS5 and on top of the line gaming PCs. For example some animatronics like the janitor S.T.A.F.F. robots will move at a staggering 10 frames per second. For top of the line consoles like the PS5 and top tier gaming PCs, that is extremely slow.

When it comes to all of these issues, I think the fault lies not only with Sony and Naveda trying to rush along Steel Wool Studios to have the game released for the holiday season, but also with the diehard FNaF fan base for getting too frenzied over the wait. As of right now, Security Breach is only available on PS4/PS5, and PC. Nintendo Switch and Xbox will get it later on this year in March. By the time it comes to other systems, maybe Steel Wool Studios will with any luck fix a lot of problems Security Breach has. With rumors about possible DLC coming out later, I hope that it will include an expansion of the main story line along with other unlockable content. Here's hoping...
