Brief Thoughts on Shin Ultraman (o|o)

Posted as Thank you to close friends and family. (content may hint at spoilers)

Shin Ultraman presents heroism as something innate within each of us. While older fans will enjoy the rapid pace homages to the original series of 1966, this new entry, by directors Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno, welcomes new fans to be charmed by the selfless character of Ultraman.

Kaiju and alien invasions, whether through brute strength or sneaky deception, are introduced one after the other to challenge Ultraman's role as a defender. With each challenge, Ultraman believes further in humanity to thrive with a shared relentless spirit.

The special effects that bring each extraterrestrial to life bring awe for the audience. Each being, immense in size, allows audiences to truly feel powerless between titanic battles. However, this shared feeling is lifted with speckles of humor from an energetic cast, each reacting at the absurdity of each encounter. Yet, the humans of this film each act towards earth's protection in their roles as best possible. A unified desire to survive that is tested by the final antagonist.

Optimism is what the film does best, taking time to show scenes between the valiant Ultraman, portrayed by actor Takumi Saitoh, and his colleagues, not hesitating once in defending the Earth as a team. His alien rivals show much surprise at their relentless spirit, explained by our heroes with confident declarations of loyalty and faith. These moments of dialogue are given time to shine even more so than the bursts of brute strength, ensuring audiences get to understand why Ultraman makes each decision with utmost care towards our safety. We are allowed to remind ourselves in such scenes of personal deeds, ones which can inspire others to value their own contributions to enduring strength and happiness.

As a newer fan of the Ultraman series, I found much to be delighted with the physical acts of heroism alone, but the words of Ultraman and his 'buddies' are what will propel this film as a gem of tokusatsu for years to come. Give it a watch, have fun, be inspired... to watch our hero fly! <3
