Too Late to Join the Art Game?

by
So, bit of a random sorta tidbit out of the blue thing that's been kinda been on my mind for some time especially now that the fact that i'm in my 30s hit me with certain personal events happening that i don't want to get into.

Am I too old to learn to art?

I often find myself with a bit of downtime at work on a consistent basis. And recently I got myself a sketchbook and pencil to bring with me figuring I have the perfect opportunity to start practicing drawing...and then that's where I blank. I can't find myself to get started, or even know how to begin. I get discouraged, draw random squiggles, give up and put the sketchbook away. Ive repeated this a few times now and it is admittedly becoming a bit frustrating. Maybe i'm just not cut out for it now that i've gotten older?

If there are any more artistically inclined folk out there see this any advice?

Thank you for reading!

Nope, never too old to learn how to draw, I fully encourage you to try to learn how to when you have the time to. I, admittedly, been getting burnt out on art due to how often I used to draw as a kid/teen. >w>;

It's gonna take more effort because of like, neuroplasticity and shit. But you can definitely still do it if you're willing to put the effort into it. I keep telling myself I'm gonna and then being lazy and not. Should fix that myself.

yeah i figured it's gonna take real effort, gotta get out of the habit of looking at other artists and being 'dang i'll never be as awesome and kew'

If you figure out how to do that let me know. I've never managed to get past that stage.

i started to learn how to draw moreso when i was 29, right with a fuggin MOUSE, right when the pandemic hit. im really fuckin happy i did. its liberating man. i know a few tuts and places that helped me, even with my tism. also do it for you too, inspite of people being dork, or the ai apocalypse. you can havea pretty pic for five seconds, butthe process of drawing is still fun

TLDR DO IT

As an honest reply from somebody who does draw...
No it is NOT too late but with a very big BUT infront of it.
Usually when you get along far enough into art everybody slows down to around the same pace of learning (provided you're actually actively trying to learn)
BUT
Usually it really is best to learn the fundamentals (I. E. Form, perspective, value, color, gesture, composition) when you're starting out.
The fundamentals are the foundation of what you draw and even experienced artists who've been drawing for years who skipped the fundamentals find it very very difficult to learn. By that point really you'd have to rethink how you view anything. I will say however that despite how gruelling it may seem to try to learn (and it kinda is) it will infact be worthit.
And also if you find yourself not learning those fundamentals in a satisfying pace, just know that even we artists who got too ahead of ourselves and are properly learning it also have a hell of a hard time with it.
Once you have the fundamentals down tho your stuff will look a lot better regardless of anatomy or rendering (you cna just make that part up as you go really depending on style)

Never too late m8~

I'm mid 30's and I'm still relatively crap but I still try at least, if for anything else my own fun. Just, don't do what I've done and shame yourself into not using references. Everyone at some point or another has had to use them, it's just how we learn.

I didn't grow up drawing, I decided I would learn how to draw when I was about 15, but didn't really take it too seriously until I was 18.  I didn't take any classes, either.

Pretty much everything you can learn in art school is something that a youtube video or online tool exists for today.

When I was starting out and did not know what to draw, I would use this tool : https://www.posemaniacs.com/
Basically, I set the timer to either 30, 60 or 90 seconds and I do a quick "figure drawing" of the character, one that is "readable" (meaning I can look at it, know what it is, and finish it later if I want to.)  I would do this for between 15-60 minutes, usually trying to do about 20-30 minutes.  Then, I would take my top 1-3 favorite figure drawings, and finish them.  I still do this today, sometimes, but I should do it more.

I would also do a variation of figure drawing where I would do a "pillow" or "sack of potatoes" instead of the typical figure.  This is an animation technique that people used back in the golden age of animation in the 90s.  It's like a rectangle/sack of potatoes and the "nibs" on the 4 corners are the shoulders and where the legs go.  A lot simpler than trying to do anatomy, especially if you are going for a toony style.

Hey thanks for the feedback! I've only managed to draw a couple things since this (see scraps) so I know I got a long way to go. I'll try to keep what you do in mind and give it a go when I can to see how it works for me!
