I for one...

by
Hello~! It's been a while! So much has happened since I last posted here it's hard to comprehend. Some of it has been really good, some of it has been really sad, the full spectrum. Things that have kept me so busy that I've barely had time for lurking, let alone posting. I called myself busy before, but I would have now a hearty laugh at 2018 me for saying that.

Since I have never been good at producing art fast, drawing has pretty much been a futile effort for a few years. I've started some pics but they're not far enough to even call them unfinished.

But, I've been dabbling with the dark side, generative AI. I use ChatGPT at work all the time (pretty much a requirement) and eventually tried some online image generators. Recently I finally plunged in deep and started playing with Stable Diffusion, and I'm really happy with the level of control it gives. Huge thanks to

who has helped me learn the ropes. I'm not going to start spamming generated stuff, I may post some every now and then, if it really becomes a thing for me I may make a separate account for it. For now, I uploaded an AI assisted remix of an old pic, you can find it here along the original: https://inkbunny.net/s/15404-p2-#pictop

Finally it's not my intention to give up on creating things the old way, but things need to calm down a bit before I can put more time into it again. Then again, I really want to do pencil stuff again... ¦3

I tried Stable Diffusion a while ago due to morbid curiosity and I kept using it for a long time after, though that was months ago. Seeing the results come from nothing is fascinating
I do find the backlash about it from artists hilarious and actually sort of hypocritical, considering how the furry fandom is mostly composed of artists drawing characters they do not own in the first place, typically for a money incentive, building their fame and folio over time that way to then complain when similar stuff happens to them later on
Also finding it hilarious how it basically makes paid artists (stuff like paywalled Patreon art mostly) irrelevant now that you can just generate decent looking stuff that you want on the fly for free as long you have a decently powerful PC
Personally I don't see myself use it to "make" art and have it posted in my gallery. Maybe to generate a generic background I could use but while I find the situation hilarious, I have too much integrity to fall for it myself

The worry is founded in many ways, but I also think that people see the value in handcrafted art. Plus I think we are still some ways away from AI being able to cater to some very specific wishes, but we are heading there fast.

I see AI as a tool to enhance both my workflow and the end results, but it'll be careful balancing act to make sure there will be enough of the original touch left. Not that it needs to be used all the time every time.

First of all... Thanks for the mention! It's good to see you again!

I see how some artist may worry about 'AI and stealing' sort of thought. I wouldn't like to think about that as a thief. For example, my favourite pokemon is Raichu. I could try to get some artist draw 'something' for me with maybe months of wait and money in between, but probably that would never happen. Now, think that, for each one of the 1000 existing pokemon, there is at least one person who wants a pic drawn for them. For the artist to finish those 1000 requests, it would take probably years if not decades to do, which basically makes this wish impossible to fullfill by 'traditional' means. So, in my humble opinion, an AI generated image is a way to create an image that wouldn't even exist otherwise, so that's better than nothing. If it is shared online, you also let those who aren't able to run SD a chance to enjoy pics of their favourite characters, which is a fullfilling goal, at least for me.

Of course, if I were to choose 10 generated AI pics or a 'hand drawn' one, I'd choose the later everytime, but let's be realistic, that's probably not going to happen to me. I've never been able to draw, so I don't really know how the drawing process is, but I suppose that, as mentioned by

, it is quite a complex process, so, if someone were to draw something for me, it would take quite a lot of work for 'nothing', apart from gratitude.

I repeat, I have never been able to draw, but I actually know VERY WELL how working with a waitlist is. I've now made over 50 SFM video requests for over a year, and just spending two weeks per video is quite difficult to manage, so I don't want to imagine what must a drawing waitlist would be like, given the time needed to get a decent pic from your own means.

To finish, I'd like to thank again

for both the confidence and good vibes that our conversations have transmitted to me, as well as the great artwork produced over the years, which is something I'll always be thankful of.

AI is a powerful tool that evolves so quickly. What an exciting time to be alive!

See you soon and...

Happy diffusing!

All true. The whales especially see a lot of value about having art done by well known artists, plus supporting the artists they like for the style being a thing for the average person in the fandom, but the reality is most people within the fandom don't really care about the artist side of things and only care for the art itself on top of not really wanting to spend money constantly for art, so the AI stuff is most useful for them

I am full stop against "AI" and do not agree nor approve of the bulk art theft it performs, nor am I happy that art of some of my closest and deceased friends and lovers is being stolen and used for profit.

I love your pencil works and I don't mind you taking a break, but you're better off putting in search keywords on a booru than messing with this stuff.

Thank you for voicing your opinion, that is also a valid point.

I'm sorry if I come off as brash or harsh.
