I am in the hospital this week.

Was admitted on 2/14 to finally, after 6 years, get my lower male to female gender transition surgery done! As of yesterday afternoon, I have traded my male genitals for a vagina! Whoo hoo!

Congrats!

Like Lou Reed's song sang:
" Holly came from Miami, F.L.A.
Hitch-hiked her way across the U.S.A.
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, "Hey, babe,
Take a walk on the wild side."
Said, "Hey, honey,
Take a walk on the wild side."
And the colored girls go
"Doo do doo do doo do do doo..."

I always found that song to be alluring, if alluring is the right world for it. It is not to ridicule transition, but to me it is about transition is a step one goes through life - big and small.

Transformation is a hard and long procedure but many must face it to go through it. Most do not even take it this far for one reason or another. Yet you did. Congrats on being brave to get there.

I'm doing really well so far. 48 hours post-surgery, and hardly any pain.

Where did you go and how much did it run you?

I am at Oregon State University Hospital, in Portland, Oregon. Medicare / Medicaid has so far covered 100% of the bill, aside from some very tiny copays on my HRT meds prior to surgery! Like maybe $4 on a 30-day supply of estradiol.

Wow... Down here we don't have any kind of coverage like that, so it'd be 100% fronted.

11th day post op, and doing pretty well. Healing faster than most people would, but my body is fantastic about that.

A few 'first hand info' notes for those who might be writing stories about surgical gender changes:
* Unless magic or incredibly advanced science is involved, someone going from boy to girl below the waist (or vice versa) will take a week post surgery before bandages come off and they get to see the changes, almost two months from surgery to being generally 'stable', and a total of three months before the 'new girl' is approved to resume sex or to do most activities without restrictions.
* During that healing process, yes, a 'new girl' can, and does, get penetrated. 3 times a day, in fact. But it's a physical therapy process more akin to the slow process of stretching your earlobes to be able to wear gauges in your ears rather than pierced earrings, as opposed to playing with a sex toy. 'Dilation' is not a particularly sexy process, even for someone who likes playing with sex toys. And while that PT requirement tapers off over time, after 6-12 months they still have to do it once a week, for life.
* Pain? Yeah, but not much. Swelling is more of the issue, for the first 2 or more months.
* It definitely fits to have a scene where they look down at where their former 'parts' were, and register satisfaction if they desired the change, or shock if it wasn't planned. That comes after about 5 days in a hospital post-surgery.

In short, in a modern realistic story where they wake up post surgery and react to what's been done, the 'big reveal' comes about 5 days after the surgery, and then you can kind of gloss over 2-3 months of daily physical therapy and recovery. At 3+ months they are 'good to go', but it's closer to 6 months before everything looks 'normal'.
