Am I nuts or has the fandom gotten a lot more commercial?

The whole AI controversy is what really made me take notice of it. Tons of people have expressed concerns that the new technology is going to ruin their business. But the thing is, the way I remember the state of the fandom when I first got involved (a little after the turn of the century) was that it was mostly hobbyists back then, it wasn't about business; as a rule it wasn't anyone's job.

And now what I'm left wondering is if it was the fandom that changed or was it me? Did the fandom *become* commercial, or was it always like this and I was just too naive back then to notice?

When we started there wasn't many venues to make a profit out of it, and downloading a single pic took minutes if you're old enough. Artists now can make this hobby into their actual job, but that also means new ways to paywall it.

Yes, I have noticed that too. Sometimes I check the feed and almost all of the journals are related to commissions or anything monetary. I have nothing against an artist making money and I understand in hard times, that's the only way for many of us to make a living. However, I think the focus of the fandom has drifted away from just having fun with anthro characters, stories, and art and has become a little too commercialized.
