What's in a name: BitCraft

by
Hello dreamers.

BitCraft is a survival crafting MMO by Clockwork Labs that began development in 2020 and is currently running a closed alpha, which I was able to get a key for. Unfortunately, so was a really big streamer and his audience, and now there are 100s if not 1000s of people trying to play it and we all have to sit in a queue for 2 hours at a time.

IT IS NOT A CRYPTO GAME.

Before crypto ruined it, the word "bit" was a cool word you used for computer and robot stuff. That is, in fact, the very reason Bitcoin is called that. Unfortunately, Bitcoin is such a monstrous piece of shit, and has spawned so many other monstrous pieces of shit, that the word "bit" is now ruined forever even though none of the other cryptos use that word.

BitCraft's premise is that robot-like beings must remake the world after something blew everything up, so it has the word "bit" in the title. But crypto scammers mistook BitCraft for a "play to earn" crypto game based on its name, and showed up in swarms to try to cheat their way into the closed alpha. You see, the top 100 most points from referrals etc. were guaranteed an alpha key.

Clockwork Labs expected this since the game has been mistaken for crypto for years. The cofounder wrote an article in 2022 justifying the name and saying you can never make a sustainable game based around crypto. So they spent a few days cleaning up the leaderboards to remove all the cheaters. This has led to crypto scammers trying and failing to pretend to be normal players on the Discord server, asking why all their points vanished, while everyone waits for the inevitable "how do u earn???" to hit 'em with the ol' ha ha ha.

The BitCraft name was a placeholder that nobody had a better alternative to. It predates any of the setting or lore direction, and the game's subtitle is now "Age of Automata", so perhaps that subtitle should be the title full stop.

Anyway. The alpha of the game is surprisingly coherent and stable, and the biggest problem is the damn queue. It's not under NDA and many folks are playing it on Twitch or whatnot if you want to watch. Maybe don't watch that giant streamer since he has a base the size of a small country and that doesn't match the typical user's experience.
