Had a Wild Encounter Thursday Night

I set out for Florida on the evening of Thursday the 11th of April.
When traveling to Florida, I usually cross the Mississippi River leaving Arkansas on the Helena / West Helena Bridge, then south on Highway 61 in Mississippi, then south from Clarksdale on Highway 49-E to Greenwood, then Highway 82 from Greenwood, Mississippi to Montgomery, Alabama.
From there, Highway 231 through Dothan, Alabama into Florida, then taking I-10 and Highway 27-19 into Central Florida.

Anyway...Getting back to the wild encounter, it happened on Highway 61 between the turn off for the Helena Bridge and Clarksdale, Mississippi at around 10:30 or 11 o'clock at night.
Highway 61 runs out of Memphis and runs along the western side of Mississippi.
It is a four lane highway very much like an interstate highway, and has a speed limit of 65 mph.
Not long after proceeding south on Highway 61, I noticed headlights ahead of me in the night way up ahead didn't look right. Those headlights were to a car speeding north toward me in the southbound lane.
Immediately, I made a quick stop and pulled off onto the emergency shoulder. That's when the car went speeding by northbound in the southbound fast lane.
I noticed the distant headlights of several cars a couple of miles back approaching. Whether that car ran head on into any of them, I don't know.
I did call 911 on my android phone to report it.

I was on a big road trip at Easter. The number of speeding fools overtaking everyone was pathetic.

Nothing's changed; people are often maniacs behind the wheel.

Reminds me of going into town early morning the other day. I almost got hit head on by a semi passing a car in a no passing zone. That isn't overly unusual though why they did was, apparently someone had their car break down so they just left it sitting there in the North bound lane totally blocking that lane

I had wondered if that driver didn't see the northbound lanes in the night and thought it was a two lane road.

Well in my case if they were paying any attention they had been on single lane road for miles

My dad wasn't so lucky. About 15 years ago a gentleman decided to end it all and ran headfirst into his semi. He tried to avoid him, but it was too late. Thank God you are okay!!!! It is cool that you come through my home state of MS though! I hope that you can visit Tupelo for some great hospitality and BBQ!!

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Also about 15 years ago, there was a water meter reader who worked for the city of Fairfield Bay. He decided to end it all over fierce arguments he and his wife constantly had with each other.
One day after a big argument, he told his wife he was going to kill himself, then hopped into his utility vehicle and drove away. The vehicle was one of those small Chevy Blazers build on an S-10 pick up platform.
He drove down a dirt road to where it intersected with a rural stretch of highway 65, then waited.
When a semi tractor trailer tanker rig came along, he on purposely pulled out in its path.
When the Blazer got hit, the chassis of the Blazer went up under the semi tractor, and the semi tractor sheered the body of the Blazer off of the chassis and flattened the body sideways. The body looked like it was put on it's side in a crusher and crushed sideways.  The motor and transmission of the Blazer were also knocked off of the chassis and busted to pieces. There were valves, other pieces of motor and motor oil everywhere.
The skid marks from where the semi driver threw on the brakes at 55 mph were only 30 feet long before they abruptly changed direction upon impact. The semi then dragged the chassis and flattened body of the Blazer into the grass off the highway before it came to a stop.
The driver of the semi tanker was not hurt. However, the semi tractor sustained enough damage to total it.
Both the semi and pieces of the Blazer were taken to a wrecker yard in Clinton.
