It means a previously domesticated animal that has returned to the wild.

That's one definition. If you look it up, others are "Resembling a wild animal." or "existing in a natural state, as animals or plants; not domesticated or cultivated; wild." It has a slightly different definition in the context of anthropomorphic animals, but a consistent one.
