Mazz and Brina
Another so-called update for the project I have been toying around for many years and never start working on seriously. There are some quick Brina sketches.

I have a lot of the Brina stories already worked on (in my head) but there are little details that I need to work on before I start drawing them down. Most of them have nothing to do with Brina herself, but with Mazz, her counterpart, who would be the narrator of the story. I haven't even decided on his definitive look.

As I mentioned before, he will be the source of contrast. Brina is a wild and rebellious rocker. Mazz is a timid catholic boy, though he will go through changes during the course of the story, his basic personality will remain the same. Their opposite differences will be the center of the stories.

I have been also thinking about the location of the comic in time and space. I want it to be in the distant future because it will have some connections with my main comic Futurepig... but at the same time, since many of the stories are based on my personal experiences, I need some elements to be consistent with jobs and situations I had back in the 1980s and 90s. The location will still be Brazil, or some alternate version of it.

I want to narrate the stories in the first person from the point of view of Mazz, but it's something that has been done before so many times it's a cliche. So I wanted an excuse for why this guy keeps talking about what happened to him... and I came with an idea. How about he is at a church's confession booth, talking to a priest. It fits his character and the setting right. And I already had in mind to include a priest character in the story, who is loosely based on a real person. This ties up some things together but also requires me to design a new character. The priest will be human and he needs a face.

I'm thinking everyone else besides the two main characters may be human. These two would be the only two "anthros" in a world of people. I never felt comfortable with "all animal" universes, it creates too many problems in the world-building. I want to have animal species only for special characters, so they stand out against the rest of the "normals".

I need to work on Mazz now. I mentioned before he is a Tapir. He is a species native of Brazil, which works with his more traditional personality, and contrasts with Brina who is a North American Possum, making her a little more out of place.

I'm not trying to go for the "creepy priest" look there  :D

Ok, without making the character an exact lookalike, I'm giving one of the priests that general look

Oh, you should read my "Michael and Amanda" story.  I believe I solved a lot of the problems you mentioned and it takes place 20,000 years in the future.

I have to find the time to read it, but it's not easy with my current work schedule. I mostly listen to audiobooks nowadays so I can "read" while driving to work and back.

No problem.  If the comments I get whenever I upload a chapter are any indication, you'll like it.

I took a quick look at your gallery and your art style reminds me of a comic artist from the 1960s.  I can't remember who it was but I remember one of the comics was called "Wonder Warthog" or something similar.

Yeah, I have a lot of influence from the 60's underground comix.
Many people think I'm doing a "retro" thing on purpose, but it's actually that my style evolved during the 70s and 80s.

I'm actually surprised more people weren't influenced by those underground comics.

Well, it's bees some time. Most of the original artists from that movement are dead now.
When I started doing comics "professionally" back in the 80s it was the peak of magazines like Mad and Heavy Metal and almost everyone I knew was inspired by those styles. But I was a teenager at the time, so most of the older people I worked with have died or retired.

Since that time I have seen art styles and technology evolve, change, and eventually leave me behind when I could not catch up anymore.

Well, as I told another artist, don't let other people decide what your style is.  That decision is yours and yours alone.  If you like the way you draw, then you're as good as you need to be.  If you want to improve your style, then, it should be your decision not someone else.
