For a school play I don't think they care much about exactly how accurate the cast is for their role. That said I expect there to be at least a few parents angry over the political aspects of this and what the school is teaching their kids etc.

They definitely SHOULDN'T care cause he is definitely doing this to be helpful and to be involved in his kid's life and not to make a political statement. But I still suspect controversy...
From a storytelling perspective he has definitely not finished exploring the consequences of exploring his newfound identity and in order for him to continue to learn and develop he needs conflict.
