On every Taas ship, station and flotilla, there are a handful of steadfast, elite mechanics who act as the last line between the Kriat souls on board and a certain cold grave in the vacuum of pitch black space.

These are members of the Intrepid Company, a special detachment of cadets selected especially for their skills of technological and mechanical expertise, ship-board familiarity, observation, resourcefulness, level-headedness and discerning action.
For the other members of the ships' crews, these Intrepid few are colloquially known as "Wranglers" Or "Can-Do's", highly regarded for their knowledge, ability and their service defying deadly situations on a regular basis.

Intrepids are always training and always on duty, though they're only called into action for extreme and critical situations.

Each of these Specialist is tasked with having full knowledge of the ship on which they are stationed, from bow to stern, as well as the handling of all tools and equipment, every deck and bulkhead, and indeed, all computers and machinery. It has been a running joke that an Intrepid knows a ship down to it's last rivet and bolt - though there may be some merit to that.

An Intrepid is expected to have what it takes to handle all climates both onboard and in the vacuum of space be they hot or cold.

Where a standard mechanic may not have the know-how to jerry-rig something that has been catastrophically damaged, let alone the constitution to do it within only a few million miles of an A Type star, an Intrepid outfit will not only prevail, but excel.

These Kriat companies boast the motto: "Do or Die", a phrase chosen to cement not only the danger of their chosen occupation, but their position on the proverbial "food chain" aboard their ships. It was chosen to remind each member as well as other shipboard members that the station of an Intrepid either succeeds - or the ship is lost to space. The ship, crew, passengers… everyone can be gone in a blink. Flash frozen by an unforgiving universe.

Intrepids typically work in teams of three, once fully assigned. During their induction, promising new prospects are chosen based on their skills, trained to hone those skills and learn new ones in rigorous testing and scenarios, including genuine hands-on experience.
Provided that these cadets are seen as promising, the induction process then moves to the next phase. The new team of three is broken up and assigned to their preliminary stations and folded into an existing company of veterans, with the most senior member being rotated out to either form their own company, PCS'd to another ship, or retiring.

Depending on the size of the ship, a company can consist of no fewer than five Intrepid Companies to no more than fifteen.

In the black, skill, knowhow and execution will take you far, knowing what parts need to be replaced, what they can be replaced with in a pinch, the best way to repair a ship's hull or how to bypass a single faulty oxy-scrubber bank to kick-start an entire oxygen farm without recycling auxiliary exhaust through main atmospheric feed… this is absolutely necessary information for an Intrepid to posses.

However, advanced knowledge requires advanced kit to compliment, and Intrepid Company maintains the most advanced kit and gear of any Kriat vessel.
Upon graduation of the initial trials, and being assigned to their new Company outfit, new team members are assigned a full set of probationary equipment.

New Intrepids receive a standard compliment of

both mechanic and technician tools that they are encouraged to add to as they see fit, Two Multi-Environmental FPCA (Full Preservation Contingent Armor) suits, code named "Stronghold Rigging" Or just "Stronghold" to be concise.

The suit itself is more than enough equipment for an Intrepid Specialist to do what they need, and be where they need to be.

Stronghold Rigging is made of an extremely durable nano-fiber, interwoven with the same high carbon material used in engine heatsinks, Apart from them being micro-climate controlled, they can withstand temperatures of over 12,000 degrees F, though temperatures in the negatives of 200 F are known to be an issue.

The suits also come with their own mobilization propulsion units for use in EVA, as well as nano-servo enhancements for added strength capabilities, featured within each main joint of the underlying suit. These nano-servo, when at max load, can move up to 4.3 metric tons of mass in zero gravity situations, but cadets are instructed that this measure should be made only during desperate situations as overexertion the nanomachinery can cause catastrophic failures of the suit's main power supply.

The face shield is blast rated, opaque with transparent poly-carbonate lying beneath it. It houses five nano cameras, feeding video to the inside of the blast shield. Inside the helmet is a Advance suite "God's Eye" HUD that transmits full visuals and augmented information while the shield is down for use in high-light situations, or during repairs where volatile equipment can rupture, causing catastrophic damage to the standard visor.

The HUD of the suit is patched remotely directly into the mainframe of the mothership, this essentially allows real-time analysis of everything the wearer views through it, during an actual mission this feed will be monitored, usually by a veteran officer, or high ranking tech specialist, feeding any needed information, input or advice.

The final Mk4 model of the Stronghold Rigging features decades worth of improvements as a result of trial and error, and have been refined to the point that further refinement and features have been deemed unnecessary. The armor is considered, for all intents, perfect.

During the Mk2 upgrades, additional capacitance reservoirs were added to the forearm outer rigging to boost hydraulic assistance to the nano-servomechanism suite.
The Mk3 saw the addition of an armored backpack, mounted high on the shoulders for enhanced mobility. The rear pack sports an upgraded carbon armor rating to prevent damage of the internal mechanisms of the Life Continuum Module, general life support, main capacitance reservoirs and transmission array.
With the Mk4 version, the Stronghold Rigging took on it's final form. It was made more snug-fitting all around for maximum maneuverability in zero G environments without the suit flopping about. As well, the God's Eye visual suite, audio and video transmission components were miniaturized, given boosted signal capacity and moved within the helmet itself after a test in Zero G saw the Intrepid mechanic colliding with the ship's hull, damaging the uplink and rendering the mechanic essentially deaf and blind inside the suit. A successful EVA back into the ship by touch alone marked not only the final update to the Rigging, but stood as a testament to the fearlessness and ability of the daring Intrepid.
