Are we sure the tree of life is good?! The poor guy not only had his ENTIRE life ruined because she believed a CHILD didn't have desire to "protect the weak", meanwhile we've seen her "guardians" to the exact same and even worst! Now she's blinding him....like wtf is this shit?!

She isn't completely at fault but she did have a hand in it. As was depicted many pages ago, he was fine with her answer and. was gonna work hard to find the answer...it wasn't until his parents did what they did that everything went down hill. He was a child whose parents for all intents and purposes disowned him for being rejected by the Tree at that moment and since this was because she rejected him AT THAT TIME, alll that anger and pain was aimed at her....though half of that should have been aimed at his parents. Its no wonder he turned out the way he did...he had no one to guide him back

Exactly how?! Tell me how a CHILD who lost EVERYTHING and had to live on the STREETS is responsible?! He turned out the way he did because not only of his horrible parents but also because the tree of goddamn life said he wasn't good enough because as a CHILD he didn't have empathy and she even KNEW this would happen and did NOTHING to help
Teko

He has to bear much of the responsibility for his attitude and actions. All the Tree did was to tell him he wasn’t ready yet.
NopeNoClue
1 year, 2 months ago
Ok clearly you have NO idea on how the mind of a CHILD works, so to save me from headache I'll out this as simple as I can. A Goddess told a child he wasn't good enough because the Goddess belive he wasn't kind hearted and knew what hardships it would cause didn't give a damn and let an innocent CHILD suffer. Find the details yourself if ya want, but put yourself into the shoes of a child and tell me what you do

Welcome to the school of hard knocks.

Price of admission is free, but tuition may very well break you.

The administrator may intervene as they see fit for the welfare of an individual student, but ultimately are responsible for ALL students and therefore can take corrective action as necessary. Therefore, responsibility will not be waived due to age or circumstance except as the administrator sees fit.

First lesson of the day, life is not fair nor will it play favorites.

Well, we understand that she's trying to get him to realize that he need s to do things for his own sake, instead of upholding an obligation to status set by a family that does not love him as he is. She is not wrong for trying to curb this tendency because much can go wrong when one feels entitled to power that's not theirs.

We also understand that being cryptic as shit about "not seeking power for it's own sake" and "failing to build communal ties that bond the powerful to the realities of everyday people" is a good way to turn those doing it into sociopaths.

The guy was clearly stuck in his own head about his intent to claim a title that apparently carried class implications.  Her job, as the arbiter of Class, was to pull his head out of his ass about their alleged shared priorities with guidance and instruction. She fucked up by letting his broken mind speak for her: spitting out answers that reflected the reality he wanted instead of the one he lived in. You dont let broken people sort out their own shit: they've physically lost the faculties needed to do that themselves, and need outside help to get right.

He's been in chapel perilous for all his life; locking him there is not how he gets out.

I think a moment of clarity is coming for all the guardians. They all have stark flaws and colossal moral failings. They're about to be shown a mirror and will need to wrestle with what they see.

Not one of the guardians has been tested against the horror they face. I've watched real friends get psychologically destroyed when they go to an actual war zone and I feel something like that is coming for these kids too.

Probably yes.
Lets remember that he just refuses to do anything to improve himself or do anything himself.
In his EYES (intended), He can only blame her for what HIS parents did to him.
To resume, he needs to either get a proper change one way of another.
Besides, stealing from a God and other things... yeah.. I think he better get a proper lesson before he succumbs to something worse.

But this wouldn't have happened if she was more proactive in situations like this. she knew his parents had issues, but only told them to stop instead of making see the error in their methods. and clearly she wasn't going in to check on them afterwards like she should have to see if any changes occurred. nigel is the product of the methods of his parents and the negligence of tree mom. and I get she's stressed but doing something like this is a very risky Gamble. I get she wants everyone to have free will, but sometimes being direct can help people just as much and stop situations like this from happening.

This.

Nothing to do with survival.

It's obvious that it will temporary, but it is at the very least a more severe way to teach a lesson.  As much as he rags on others though, how prone he himself is to hatred, and how he is only growing more spiteful and not bothering to try and figure out what the lesson is...perhaps not the most popular opinion, but this might be a good (or at the very least an interesting) lesson for him from what I'm seeing.

This Sucks so much, yeah right tree of life, she should be called the tree of evil, I felt from the start she was more than she would lead people on to believe.

I hope that even if he is blinded he finds a way to get back at her for ruining his whole life.
he deserved better, she should have talked to his parents, but instead, she just left him be.

isn't there a saying you reap what you harvest?

If it was me I would find any kind of weapon, preferably a sword of any kind, and slit her throat with it, I liked this comic a lot, but now every inch of me hopes she and all the rest of the guardians die a horrible death.

now we know why she asks for new guardians, she just wants new cannon fodder.

How did she ruin his life? By telling him no as a child and it wasn't even a hard no it was a not right now come back when you understand no two or so pages ago she straight up tells him why and he still threw a temper tantrum. Even going back to his childhood she told him back then why she didn't choose him. At best his parents carry a bulk of the blame they abandoned a child but I guess being told not today is worse.

People screaming that she OWES him for something, like there's not a whole world to save, and Nigel is a sole protagonist, and not a spoiled brat, not getting what he wants, then being abandoned by the parents that raised him in such way.
But somehow it's solely Luna's fault.

She's not perfect and has alot of flaws, but she owes nobody nothing.
I trully feel sorry for her.
Imagine trying your best to save whole world you helped grow and letting it live freely, only for such people from comment section to dogpile on you for doing a "poor job". x_x

But somehow it's solely Luna's fault.

He was groomed for a single role since he was born. To be her soldier.
He didnt have a choice in the matter, he in fact embraced it at first and tried to satisfy the demands of his parents and the tree.
But he was denied without an explanation, and then abandoned.
And despite being betrayed in such a fashion, she now blinds him with the literal demand to make him conform to her views.
She needs her to be this.
She needs her to be that.

Is that a position of good in your opinion? Is that a positive moral position?
Torturing and grooming children cause you want soldiers for your cause?

You speak of one dimensional views, but apparently you cant even seem to figure out the views and position of Nigel.

Do you absolve the parents of their role when what they forced on the child fail, and THEY ignore him for THIER failure?

Do you admit someone into your family/organization who is thoroughly unfit for it, knowing if you did they would damage or destroy it?

She's giving him a chance and a path to learn those lessons his parents failed to teach him. If you can't see that then you are acting as blind as he is.

When everyone's fate is on the line, she can't afford luxuries such as time for him to learn the lessons he needs to learn. It's time for the school of hard knocks method, or everyone is just dead.

Her hand is being forced in this too, or did you forget some of her fellow gods are already dead and corrupted?

I do not. But she didnt resolve the problem, did she?
She didnt confront the parents with what they have done, did she?
She even refused to properly explain what he lacks, literally making it seem like its not the parent's but HIS fault cause HE lacks something like HE is damaged goods.

" whiskeyfur wrote:

No, but i also do not go out of my way to destroy their life by behaving completely unhinged, refusing to explain myself, leaving them guilt tripping, letting their family think that they are trash, and then blinding them when they spin out of control because of it.
Oh and probably i also would not avoid to correct the parent's behavior that has lead up to this.

You destroy a life with your actions, chase the individual into a completely destructive behavior, subdue and break them, and then give them a chance to serve you properly?
Sounds like your average slave trader. Not only will they end you, they will keep on going till you thank them for it from the bottom of your heart.
No.
Thank you, but no.
You may claim that the ends justify the means, but you do not get to pose like some sort of saint in the process.
You are taking lives and converting them into little more than throw away tools in your battle. Your existence might depend on it and thus you find it justifiable, but the atrocities you have committed are self-evident.
And despite that, you have a character that acts like she is washing her hands of all the responsibilities of her own actions.
"I really dont want to do this"
"you leave me no choice"
Sorry.
Thats just a despicable, delusional personality of someone who cant even own up to the net sum of her own actions.

And thats my opinion. If you disagree, you are obviously free to have your own view and interpretation of her character naturally.
whiskeyfur
1 year, 1 month ago
It's also obvious you have your own opinion, your hill that you've chosen to die on.

What you're ignoring is she's making hard choices that has to be made now because time is almost up.

She doesn't have time to 'do it right'. How many gods are dead and corrupted already? Too many. And sitting around waiting for one guy to get his act straight is not a luxury she can afford.

Leaders are in the position they are to make the decisions no one wants to make. He has to shape up, NOW. Not later, not under any kind of guidance, and she can't devote all of her attention to him which is the 'right' way to do it.

That takes time. Time she doesn't have. Time NO one in that world has.

Hate her now, but ultimately she's doing what she believes will get the best results because if that fails? They're dead.

The chaos does not take prisoners nor accept peace. It's killed or be killed. That is what she's up against, and putting up with the antics of one spoiled child, she doesn't have time for.

You are too focused on ONE character, and ignoring the threat to the world as a whole right now.

Very unexpected! :D

All those people saying she's evil. *chuckles* ^^ If she is 'life incarnate' then yeah, that comes with the unpleasant parts to. Every little or big downside that comes from being alive. They suck, but are still likely leagues better than all manner of other fantasy setting alternatives. O.O

After all, this probably isn't permanent and if the situation were flipped and Rah'Jan found him first. o.o Yeah, not seeing is super unpleasant but he's still alive and has some chance at redemption here. :D So I'm rooting for him even if he can be a butthead. ^^;

Amen for a sane commenter!
Life is never "fair" and it never "owes" anybody anything, as most of the comment section is turned to be adamant about.
Live has all the ups and downs, like a rollercoaster, and bad things help us grow a character.
It's basics of story writing!
You have a character, you throw issues at them, make them overcome the issues, be it inner or external, let them grow and become stronger.

I'm trully interested how it will all turn out, Zummeng has such a superb way of twirling the storyline.
winkin
1 year, 2 months ago
Yeah! This is why we see Death/The Grim Reaper represented all the time, death is an equalizer, death is 'fair' at a cosmic level, and because it's also inevitable we can hope for something 'kind' or at least 'patiently easy going' to greet us after life is done.

But we never see Life/The Happy Sower, because if we did we would probably hate them as they seemingly 'favored' one person over another or callously allow horrors to continue to occur.

And yep, if she had just seen him and gone. "OH! Good you're here, so I've forgiven you and I need you to forgive me in order to become a Guardian now." :D That wouldn't have worked out even if he did somehow accept it, would have been bad writing. ^^;

We just need to be happy that it's The Tree of Life involved in this and not Evie The Goddess of Sweaters. O.O She would have cursed him with a permanent uncomfortable tag brushing somehow through the fur on the back of his neck. *shudders* We must knit in supplication now and praise The Eternal Orange for her mercy in permitting this realities continued existence of comfortable winter wear.
NeksusCat
1 year, 2 months ago
Lmao, oh nyooo, not the tag! XD
That would be trully evil...
But if the sweater is hand knitted?
Then it will be forever-itchy, no matter how many times you wash it!
winkin
1 year, 2 months ago
Not if it is properly blessed by She-Who-Munches-All-Chocolate! >:D

This can also be prevented using white vinegar, soak the sweater in cold water with just a few table spoons, then with a good quality hair conditioner you massage the sweater, let it sit, rinse completely and press the water out gently, let it dry flat before putting it into a ziplock and setting it in the freezer overnight. :D

This should soften the offending fibers while the freezing will keep shorter ones from sticking out. Does work 'most' of the time but yeah some knits are just inherently itchy but that's what undershirts are for anyway. ;3

Thank you, may your knits be even and your purls unblemished. ^^

You seem to forget that Nigel is included in life cause he is alive.
And he does not owe her anything either other than grief.

Life remembers when its harmed. So did Nigel.
And now he is harmed yet again.
Do you know what you call something that keeps on harming you?
You call it an enemy.
NeksusCat
1 year, 2 months ago
Yes, he's alive, like everybody else.
Which solidifies my point - he's not the only one.
Luna has a whole world to care for, to try and guide despite the fact that nobody listens.
Nigel is but one of many, with just a potential to become something more.

He's alive, and aside from parents abandoning him, nothing trully bad happened to him.
He could've stayed at his home, even though parents didn't treat him like he was there (then again, they did same with Toby, before switching Nigel for his younger brother), he could've listened to Luna or tried to stick with someone else in his life  but he persistantly CHOSE to be alone.

She didn't really harm him, it was his parents' doing, and his own choices, she didn't accept him as a Guardian, cuz he wasn't ready.
And now she's giving him a reality check, a really harsh one, but given Luna's soft nature, I doubt the blindness will be permanent, more likely he'll either gain a new way of seeing or he'll get his sight back after understanding at least SOMETHING.

He and his parents are more deserving of being called his "enemy".
Not that Luna's actions are all-round right, she has alot of flaws, which makes the story interesting.
Yet her actions does not justify all the hate she's getting.

I get the vibe that people who hate on her, has same childish, entitled vibe as Nigel does right now.
Labyrias
1 year, 2 months ago
From birth on she was a presence that literally pressed her own needs and wishes onto him.
Even right now, he is being blinded cause she needs her to be a soldier.
He is being molded and forced into a role, in part against his will.

To stand up against that is childish?
Ever dictator, every chapter that we refer to as the darkest in human history, had one of these great visionaires who wanted a unified planet, a utopia, a solution to all problems, in short: A greater need and goal which demanded sacrifices to achieve.

What you see in the comments is just two sides of the coin:
Those who buy into the dictator's words, and those who do not.
NeksusCat
1 year, 2 months ago
I see that you're only focusing on one side of the spectrum, where Luna is a manipulating and sceming mastermind, twisted on making everyone around her a "soldier" for her cause, against their will, even if it was shown time and time again, that she values "free will" of others more than anything.
It's your choice to view this story in such way, I'm not inclined to prove that you're "wrong", or that I'm ultimately "right".

We still yet to see further the whole story.
What I've seen so far, was that Luna acted with care and compassion to everyone, untill they rejected her help and care.
She spoke to Nigel, asking him if being Guardian is what he trully wants, maybe he want to become someone else?
Which doesn't fit with narrative of her "only wanting to make him a soldier for her cause".
She knows he can be much more than he is right now, blinded by rage and spite, and wants him to finally see the world around him.

Does she do a good job being a Deity and saving everyone, or showing every being a "better way"?
No she doesn't, she's not an allseeing and allmighty goddess, many envision her to be, she has issues, lots of flaws, but even more care and desire to save what she can, even if her struggle is futile.
She lacks understanding of mortals, we've learned as much.
Maybe Nigel's gift of Vision is what she trully needs to finally help HER change?

We're yet to see.

I wrote a lengthy response here, but i ended up deleting it.
I do not wish to take your joy from neither the character nor the story.

In my personal opinion her intent might be the best of the best and holiest of holy, but her methods of doing so, and the constant self victimizing as she does it... that does not work with me.

Well whatever.

It's okay, I only wish people wouldn't get THAT heated about a character, when we've yet to see the whole picture, and see both sides, not just one.

Yeah, I understand the point of wanting people to take better care of others, to do better.
But yet again, Life is not so simple.
It's full of struggles and misunderstandings.

You mix up ego and the concept of life. That does not work.
Life is harsh, but life is equal to all it encompasses because everything is subject to survival of the fittest. There are no exceptions and there are no backdoor deals. Its the closest thing to an universal law, and its absolutely irreconcilable with the idea of some avatar that goes around and does things how she sees fit.

Its two opposing concepts.
You either have a universal rule that treats everyone equally.
Or you have a fake nuka cola deer that poses as a god, trying to rule over everything on her own behest.

Personally I love Nigel. I think he thinks he wants to be a guardian or knight but I think he really wants his families love. He's like Zuko from Avatar. But his families love wasn't worth having, not after the way they treated him. And I'm including Toby I kinda feel if Toby really loved Nigel, He would have put in more of an effort to help him or talk to him, but we will have to wait and see about that I guess.

Kinda ironic he will become a knight and all the joy he would have felt from becoming one will be overshadowed by the pain of loosing his sight, that and he won't be able to see the faces of the people who doubted him. Kinda a hollow victory.

I hope Nigel gets his sight back eventually. And I still hope Nigel gets a happier ending then the other knight's. I feel he should have it.

I always wondered why Nigel had a staff I know he is poor but you'd think they'd give him something better for the road. when he was trained in the sword. Now I know he needs it to get around. I hope the theory of Nigel becoming the a Seer is true I truly believe he needs his own supernatural gift to make up for his shitty childhood. And the staff weapon might suggest wizard.

And If Nigel has to lose his sight I hope Luna has to do something drastic too Miralle ass well it's not fair that Nigel gets the blunt misfortune of the knights. Especially if Miralle is going to be an ass to him after this like I think she will be.

I think Luna went way too far and if anyone needs a harsh lesson she does. I feel as if she is trying to manipulate Nigel rather than going thru the work of helping him. I hope Luna actually goes to the effort of making it up to Nigel and don't mean some empty words I mean action.

If the story telling makes sense instead of going for clichés, then no.
The most sensible thing for Nigel to do based on his personality, would be to willingly join chaos and end the enemy that keeps on harming him over and over again

and prove the tree of life's point. meaning everything up until now has made sense. nigel deserved it.

it's not the tree's fault his family did this to him. she didn't ask them to, the story made it clear that they did this as a family status thing. and this is it backfiring. it's unfortunate for the kid. but if he were truly worth whatever a guardian position is, she'd know. so far, nigel seems like a bitter little bundle of vices unable to move on in life. granted, some of that makes sense given his situation. but failure is failure.

Not really. what we've seen of chaos makes me think its not that simple. maybe THEY are right for all we know, we only got their point of view yet, and guardians seems to fall to the other side pretty easily ...
VMachiavelli
1 year, 2 months ago
the point is the framing is obvious and this generation seems to only want to flip the script for whatever reason and find a twist in morality that there is no evidence of existing. so far it's pretty cut and dry. egotistical kid doesn't get what he wants but then gets what he deserves. is it still sad given the circumstances? sure. but that doesn't put him in the right, doesn't put who is so far clearly the force of good in the wrong and it doesn't mean you're being set up for a hook in the storytelling. what I'm excited to read for is the how, not so much the why or what. that bit is pretty clear so far. and hey, I can be wrong eventually. but if I am, it's in no way because something is obviously 'off' so far. cause it's not. the lines aren't thick enough for you to read between just yet.
Denton

Maybe the framing is too obvious and tired and "this generation" ("ok boomer" by the way, wtf xD? Also probably barking at the wrong tree with that.) now expect it to not be what it seems?

No twist in morality nor any hint?

We saw earlier a knight being converted by the embodiment of chaos with some memories that clearly disturb him (and chaos magic ooze that may or may not be mind control or just enhancement). chaos guy can lie ... or he doesnt need to because truth hurts more. (since we didn't see what he saw, its NOT cut and dry.)

Is the guy a spiteful asshole ?
Certainly and with reasons, how misguided he may be it makes SENSE to him and by the looks of it, some readers as well. (witch tells you how good of a character he is as we can relate to him ... even though he had millions smarter, spiteful and hateful other ways to act)

Is he in the right ?
no, so what? People can not be in the right and their antagonists be in the wrong too. (not saying she is one in the comic, but she certainly is his for this part of the story in his mind)

I personally think he's owed come catharsis and to exact comeuppance upon his family and to an extent to the godess and i'd gladly see both at least realizing how fucked up they made him by their meddling and or inaction.

Because for now its "i'm sorry you dont see things like you should see" witch, by nigel account and mine, IS bullshit.

Does he deserves punishment? yes.
Does he deserve what he gets? Absolutely not, no one does, that why we don't do that shit, thats called torture.

He sure deserved a place in an orphanage earlier and that failing later loads of prison time but thats a current theme with gods, their punishments are always either way above the crime or way too late. (Medusa comes to mind in greek Mythology amongts others.)

Now the story will proceed how it has to and i'll be thrilled to discover the definitive answer.

But the comic is more than 100 pages long now so its wrong to assume there isnt any wiggle room for interpretation with the info we got. and its fun even if its wrong.

By the way, people can read the meaning of a blue chair in a painting. thats how thin the line had to be to start weaving theories.

Tldr: The story's fine,i'm a big fan and i'm invested in it.  i'm just having fun making my own supputations and find interesting to argue about character choices witch are questionable at best imo.

Damn, that was unexpected...I trust the Tree, and I know that what she's doing is for his own good and the safety of the world...but that's still pretty rough! She's the Tree for a reason though, and I believe her methods are just, if not a little drastic!
Labyrias

Is she tho?
She is literally torturing him into a shape that she wants her to be.
She wants a knight, a specific thing, a specific personality, and she is literally trying to torture and groom him into that.

Absolutely nothing about this is for Nigel's own good.
phunkiezero

She's not trying to "Shape" anyone into anything that she wants, she's just giving out a punishment (although a rather harsh one) because he refuses to change the way he sees things. She never once in the comic so far forcefully , or even manipulatively, got anyone to do what she wanted. She always let people have their free will, gave them options, and told them her opinion and recommendations. Whether they took her recommendations or not is their choice, like Tristan chose to stay with his shitty "friend" group despite the tree telling him that they're just taking advantage of him, and now he's still a thief grown up because of it.

If this guy would have actually listened to her words and started thinking for himself, instead of deciding that she ruined his life by refusing to make him a guardian and keep building this hatred for all these years, he could have probably been made a guardian, like his brother is now.
Instead he's trying to steal a holy scarf meant for the knights, fueled by hate and envy that's been building for years. That was his decision, so this is his punishment.

" `because refuses to change` the way he sees things", don't take what I've written down out of context.

It's his fault he's decided to keep being Scornful and choosing to hate and cast blame to the tree that he didn't become a guardian, and thinks that it's her fault his life was ruined as a kid, when it's his parent's fault for casting him aside like they did.
Instead of going on his own way, he let anger control him.

The tree didn't directly tell him the directions, it didn't tell him that he needed to do [This] to be a guardian, he needed to work on it himself. Nor did the tree step in once he was angry with her while he was still young, she didn't tell him what to do or how to do it.
If the tree was trying to shape him into what she wanted, she would have done so while he was still young, while it's the easiest to do so. She had multiple chances to, yet she let him go on his own free will, and this is what his free will led him to do, it's his fault for keeping this hate fueled for so long.

He was carrying her on his back from the moment he was born.
He was being groomed to her knight, her soldier, and he tried to fit the role just to be betrayed twice over without as much as given a reason.
You say he choose to be scornful. Everyone alive would choose to be scornful after literally satisfying every requirement, then denied regardless without a reason, and then being disowned for it.

There is nothing alive on this planet that would not be scornful after that.
Not you.
Not me.
Not anyone else.
And what does she do upon confrontation?
She blinds him on top while playing the victim how she doesnt want to do this, like its not her fault, she is being forced to do it. Not even having the spine to own up to what she is doing.

Thats my two cents, and i'll stop here.
I shouldnt have started this argument in the first place cause i do not intend to take the joy of the story and character from you.
Enjoy it as you like and love.
Its just kinda baffling to me that ppl would choose to blame a child for rejecting inconsistent grooming and conditioning, even after he is directly blinded cause momma nuka deer needs sum soldiers.

Would it have been better for him to steal the guardianship? Nigel has openly admitted—multiple times in fact—that he only wants the Guardian title for himself, and the so called "glory" and respect that comes with it. What was done to him throughout his life was horrible of course, but he feels that because of those hardships, he's literally owed the title over other people who worked their whole lives for it. He blames the Tree for everything bad that happened to him, even though the true perpetrators are the ones around him. He even said out loud that he doesn't want to help people once he gets that title. And trying to steal it from someone else is not the mark of a guardian at all--it's the mark of a villain.
Labyrias
1 year, 2 months ago
Unrelated question. She could have stopped him, she could have reconciled him, there would be just about a billion other routes to take here than to simply let him "steal the guardianship".
Did it occur to you that he acts like he is owed something, because he already lost his free choice and identity to her?

From the moment he was born, he was groomed to be her knight and soldier. He went along with it to the best of his knowledge, being (without understanding how or why) misguided by his parents.
When his moment came, he was told his entire life was a failure, and was given no reason as to why.
His parents abandoned him at the drop of a hat even though they trained him wrong.

He was betrayed seven times over without his own fault.
Naturally he ended up raging against the world.
Its the most common sense path anyone would take under these circumstances.

This encounter just adds to the problem. It does absolutely nothing more.
Even if she succeeds in forcing this child onto a path of her wishes, she has done it the most atrocious and despicable way possible, by breaking him like an animal.

What she is doing, to someone who has been screwed with from early childhood on, is something unforgiveable.
It doesnt matter what kind of world saving "end justifies the means" scenario you run on this. What she did to him, from a personal perspective, is nothing short of disgusting.

Despite his own mistakes, his early life was colored by the cruel and ultimately wrong-headed treatment by his family.  With such weird expectations twisting him, it isn’t too surprising to see a young person feel spurned after being rejected by a system that he had expected to be embraced by.  That being said, he is still in the wrong.  I think the Tree sympathizes greatly with the cruelty foisted onto him, but also probably knows some bit of predestination and fate that he doesn’t.

And so we are here: a young man that has, up to this point lived with spite in his heart encountering the one he blames for all his troubles. Perhaps he’ll find catharsis in seeing things without the ugly veneer he is used to seeing on everything.

Either way, I love your work.  Beautiful art and charming characters with heartfelt stories.  Thank you.

I would like to point out to folk that the Tree of Life didn't 'blind' him, 'remove his vision'. She entirely removed his pupils and cornea, etc. Please also note that the Tree of Life lacks these things. She didn't just harshly remove his ability to see as a metaphor for 'seeing the world in a different light', she is forcing him to see the world the same way that she does.
RabbitHabbit

Or she's a Deity and has no need of pupils. For the standard person this IS being blinded, doesn't matter if you can 'see with your heart'.
RaShCl

"she is forcing him to see the world the same way that she does." So because it's her way it is the best?
Who is she to decide that, there are probably better ways to show him things, and that way is not by blinding him.
It will only make his hate for her and the other guardians grow. and i can't blame him.

I am receiving very strong Arya Stark vibes. Definitely not what I was expected, but I really love this twist.

And I don't think that this blindness will be short-lived (=> Arya), he's too bitter for that and now even angrier than before. Besides, on this sheet https://inkbunny.net/s/2079458 he is assigned a "battle staff" as a weapon - who knows, maybe this is normally his blind man's stick...

Anyway please, please don't be put off by the outcry. The story(telling) is really great so far, even if I didn't expect such an action from the Tree due to her previous appearance as an "understanding creation deity". - Top! Better this way than if the story is linear and predictable = boring. And as can be seen in the other comics, the characters all have their quirks and weaknesses, none is perfect, but that gives them depth.

Keep up the good work!

Is she genuinely stupid?
Like... seriously. Is this a character trait for her?

Instead of reconciliation, she blinded him. She literally just created something that will be completely rabid and hate her for the rest of his life, and will join chaos at the very first opportunity.
And she keeps repeating that she feels sorry about it but keeps on ruining the kid's life... complete psychopath.

Well, was not expecting this.

I think him being angry at being blinded is to be expected.    Question is if he'll be able to overcome it.

fffffffffffffffffff Imma have to call it. Shes the villain.

No one blinds someone without a good reason and honestly telling him to see with his heart is not even a valid reason, let alone a good one. That said, I understand her reasons. But she could have SHOWN him visions and told him secrets. So far all she has done is adopt one orphan, kidnap one child from a distant village, ruin this kids's life, and let everyone around her bully the one actual kind person we have seen.

Ok so I'll put my hat into the ring on this point after reading the comments and such. I actually find some enjoyment that your story brings discussion/ debate and such on the matter.

I kept up with the story so far and from what I gathered is this

- Nigel's family were always chosen as the guardians of the tree, and from what she said was by their own path and merit (I might have that wrong XD)

- Nigel's parents thought that this was a distinct honor that they began to raise him thinking he was ready at such a young age even I wouldn't let that happen and even tell them this despite their ways, but the goddess said she has told them and they didn't listen. At this point I get that should she intervened she would be taking the free will from them to raise their kid, but at the same time the parents should have heeded her advice cause of their pride. This might be what made her not take him as a guardian, but I think she should have had the parents there and scolded them. Then giving Nigel the knowledge to understand what it means to be a guardian and to understand that its not an easy task.

- Though with the way things played out Nigel was understanding, but the parents treated him like shit and then instead of being supportive parents they treated him like an outcast and he lashed out. Yes he blames the tree cause of what transpired, but he should blame his parents at how narrow minded they were for treating him like this. Its their own fault and Nigel is now bitter for both his parents and her. Now that she forced blindness on him I do hope he can grow from this, but this is an extreme gamble that could make him more easily viable for the evil guy to grab and "give" him his sight back.

- Now the adoptive daughter I already don't like as she acts like a spoiled brat grown up. I liked her with her younger innocents, but the Tree should have given her discipline and responsibility cause how she is acting now just makes me want to see a pie deck her in the face. This includes the younger girl that, although with good intentions, made a poison that almost killed their leader? I would need to look back at the previous pages. Not once is she regretting what she did and to make sure she doesn't do it again, but when Nigel brought it up to them a few pages ago I was hoping that would have shook them so they realized they need to do better.

- I don't know about the other guy but he seems head strong and liable to take even the hardest hit given how he talked to his dad, but I didn't like how the girls were acting to him when I barely see his character in this.

Sorry that this went on too long but I wanted to get out my thoughts on this. All I know is that the Tree has made some poor choices and I just hope she learns as well despite living for so long.

Ok, no. I still love the world, and the comic, and am very looking forward to where the story is going, but after this? I hope the Tree gets punched at some point. Literally. Preferably hard enough her nose cracks. There are better ways to help a person grow than TRAUMATIZING and CRIPPLING them, you self-righteous walking glowstick!
