I notice there is a bit of a predatory culture people like to take with smaller name artists, and y'know, I get it, everyone loves getting a good deal on stuff, and while there are some crazy artists that are willing to put hours of work love and care into a piece for 15-20 dollars, that person ain't me, so don't bother tryin!

Person: "Why do you charge so much for your art??"

Artist: "Because the amount of labor put into it is worth more than $20 and also I like to not starve to death."

This is true of writers too. Often people will play it up as "requests" as if they're just innocently asking if you could do something with X in mind. It's annoying.

If you want something from a creator, fucking be willing to pay for it. Some might be open to trades but I wouldn't count on that alone.

I know what you're talking about.  I've had a couple of people read my stories and ask me if I do commissions.  I always apologize and say, "No".  I don't refuse because I don't want to do them; I refuse because I don't know their characters well enough to believe I could do an adequate job on a story with their character in it.  The only time I've ever used another person's character in one of my stories was when I included Zig Zag, Shelia Vixen, and Sabrina in a chapter in my current story.  But, I've read EWS's "Sabrina-Online" enough that I know those characters well enough to do them justice.  Fortunately, when I've turned down the opportunity for a commission, none of the requesters got upset.  (I understand that's rather rare.)

I've noticed that, too, especially when it comes to artists who are kind of new to the whole idea of selling their work, or even to art in general, and maybe aren't as confident in themselves as they ought to be. It's really unfortunate, and this is why I try to encourage everyone to sell their work at what they feel it's worth, not what they think they "have to" because they're not "big name artist here". And to remember, it's not just the art itself you're selling, but your time and experience, too. And if people gripe about it, let 'em gripe. Artists deserve to eat, too!

And I don't really mean to turn this into a lecture, or anything. So I'll end it with a fuck yes, and good for you!

Back in 2013 somebody sent me a DM on tumblr. It was a very detailed description of a drawing they wanted me to make. They went in depth with it.

Not once did they ask or offer any compensation, it was just an expectant note. It opened with, "Here's what I need you to draw."

I wrote back with an equally detailed description of a fifty dollar bill. I opened with, "Here's what I need you to pay." They blocked me.

That's just mean-hearted on their part.  I never send an artist that kind of note without first asking if they do commissions and how much they charge.  If I don't want to pay what they charge, I thank them and explain why I can't commission them at that time and also say that I hope to be able to afford their fee in the future.

I do believe "Free Commissions" are called gifts.  Of course, I could be wrong.

Hi! I would love a commission with my very detail character, with a full background, When I post it, you'll get lots of exposure, and it's totally a worth an overly detailed commission to be seen working for me!

(I'm joking if it somehow wasn't clear)

LOL.  I'm sure every artist has read that kind of note at one time or another.

Yeah not funny

But, but the exposure?! D:
What ever will us smaller artists do without exposure?!

Yea; no. I know the pain that goes into good art, I'm not even what I'd call a real artist since I'm a writer. x3
But spending 8+ hours working on a bit of something that isn't your cup of tea or in any way something you want to do can really kill off all your desire to art at all.

That said I love how even asking for any input on stuff is the total opposite it seems. "Hey what do you think of this?" only to be met with total silence. >.> It may get thousands of views, even  a hand full of faves, but... No opinion at all from anyone. XD Shows to go you what exposure gets you.

I had the exposure line before.  But it was asking for a ten minute sketch to be added to a collection for some charity. They found some of my art on a now defunct site and wanted me to toss them something free to make a mural out of.
I could live with that.

Niche cases happen. No lie if like the "top viewed artist" on the site asked me to write a story for a picture of theirs, i likely would for that level of exposure. But lets face it, your average joe don't have that kind of exposure. XD

Honestly, it never ceases to amaze me how cheap commissions are.  You're getting a bespoke piece of art, that seems like it should be more expensive.

And then you have the other way.  Had someone message me outside of an art/story site but referenced it.  They were interested in drawing one of my characters because how I described her.

Artist: Hey your Rezi Benn character sounds neat, do you mind if I try drawing her?
Me: sure if you like.
Artist: any references?
Me: no sorry, everything is in text but I'd love to see where you go with her.
Artist: go with her?  You mean how I imagined her?
Me: Yep go wild, I would love to see how you interpreted the description of her (gives a more concise description)
Artist: Oh cool.  I think I got a sketch ready (links to the image)
Me: Oh nice,. that's close to how I imagined her, I love the details.
Artist: Oh good, so sixty dollars for the art?
Me: ....
Me closes the discussion with "I'll have to think about it" and never open the chat again.

I would have loved to commission a good piece of art for my gynoid bunny.  but he didn't mention what my sixty would have gotten me other than a half finished sketch on notebook paper. Sadly that's not worth more than maybe fifteen to twenty to me. and he did contact me first so I thought it was just him asking permission to draw my character as practice or something. But to drop a price on me like that... love that you can make money off your time and skills, but don't be like him.

Had someone ask me to draw a multi-page comic about shitting in diapers when I first opened my "requests" and very kindly declined it. Explaining that my supplies cost a fucking fortune (good graphic markers are $5 each), and that would easily cost hundreds of dollars due to how much work it would take. Also that I don't draw things like that in general, at least not for free (or my normal prices) and not posted to my gallery.
