Have you tried using all the brush settings, including Advanced, then testing them out? You want a square tip, no minimum size, pump blending up, make the edges hard. The rest of the shading and brushes work out exactly the same techniques as Photoshop for softening and hardening lines.
This isn't a particularly clever painting, it's probably one of my worst ones in terms of cleaning it up but has a good fundamental concept. I use one or two mix-in colors most of the time.
