This rover was sent to explore a desolate planet that mission control thought was uninhabited.
Mission control could hardly believe the images the rover had sent back just before it's coming destruction.

The world that sent the rover on it's mission to this planet is a couple hundred million miles away, and is helpless to do anything to rescue the rover. And the rover was never equipped with any kind of self defense mechanism because design engineers thought there would be no need for such a system.
The rover is on it's own, defenseless, and with no one to provide rescue, and is about to be ripped and smashed apart.

In light of the last images the rover sent, any and all future plans to colonize the planet are now permanently abandoned. They now know something dangerous is on that planet, and it is not friendly.

Note: Gender was not entered in the keywords. That species of monster does not use sexual means in order to reproduce.
When a fragment occasionally becomes dislodged from the creature, it grows into a new creature. Hence why it would be a big mistake to blast one of them into pieces.

They speculate it may have been dropped off there by a civilization of another world, using the planet as a dumping ground.

Then they ask, "If that is so, what's to stop them from dropping one off on Earth?"

"Or many of them dropped off here", another scientist questions.

They couldn't blow it up either. I just now added this to the description;

Ohhhhhhhh. Gotcha. So unless every single atom can be destroyed at once then dumping it on such a planet is the best way to go.

About the only way really.

Except to poison it or immerse it in caustic acid...Or possibly bombard it thoroughly in a chamber with an intense dose of gamma radiation.
A trip to the Sun in a rocket ship would do the trick.

That make's sense.

Am reminded of that mechanical spider race from the Stargate series, I believe they were called Replicators.
