Yeah, don't ask---this comic has some behind-the-scenes history. The nutshell is I promised a watcher I'd *upload it if they could solve a puzzle I thought was oh-so-clever (it wasn't), but then when the time came to upload ...I couldn't bear to---the art is SO bad (as all my art is)! D: Additionally, I've worked very hard to push as much of my art back from the front pages of my DA and FA galleries that to start over again, well ...let's just say thank God for the scraps folder. :P
*in fairness, I asked someone else to upload it on my behalf ...but this wasn't exactly what I'd implied I'd do, so of course it wasn't satisfying to my promise: https://inkbunny.net/s/3240198
This issue wormed its way into another that had me drinking yesterday ...bad enough that I was literally in tears (**don't make fun---hitherto, I hadn't cried in years) and had to telephone someone for support ...and an unasked-for but necessary talking-to (consequently, I've committed to watching at least the first season of 'The Chosen' now ...yep, this's part of the reason why I hate drawing and need to step away from the internet in general).
**I AM A MAN /punch/ D:
Anyway...
Seems it's time for snack at the Popple house ...well, it's actually the Travis's house, but why be overly specific? :P
Anyway, it seems Pepper has made cupcakes, and has made the biggest of all for herself. Pixel seems to take exception to this. Let's see what happens...
[PIXEL contemplates his tiny cupcake next to Pepper's giant one]
PIXEL (to self): "So unfair"
PIXEL (to Pepper): "Maybe I'm 'bats' to suggest this, but would you like to take a 'stab' at some anadromes before we eat?"
PEPPER (admiring her cupcake): "Sure! Maybe that'll bolster my a-popple-tite for this baby!"
[intrusive ad for Diet Sundrop, to remind everyone that DIET SUNDROP exists)]
PIXEL: "The second clue is the answer ...I express disgust. Reverse me if the subject is you and I"
PEPPER: "We!"
PIXEL: "I grow under the ground. Reverse me to find me on your calendar"
PEPPER: "May!"
PIXEL: "A cat has four of me. Reverse me to give and receive"
PEPPER: "Swap!"
PIXEL (flailing): "Last one! Quick! We're under pressure! Reverse us and we're an end to meals!"
PEPPER: "Desserts!"
PIXEL (sneaky): "Very good, Pepper! But you wanna know something funny---the answers come together to form a sentence!"
PEPPER (giggling): "Oh, yeah! 'We May Swap Desserts!'"
PIXEL (taking the giant cupcake): "Gee! Thanks, Pep!"
PEPPER (realizing she's been tricked): "NOOoooo!"
Pencil...
The featured pencil is a long-ferruled specimen advertising Dolly Madison Cakes (the other side of the pencil advertises Butter-Nut Bread).
This pencil was printed before the Schulze Baking Company (the makes of the above-cited products) became Interstate Bakeries/Hostess Brands (so this pencil was made sometime between 1914 and 1930, but based on the ferrule, this pencil was probably made no later than the mid 1920s).
I hadn't planned on featuring ANY pencil with this upload, so though the featured pencil is sharpened, it wasn't used to draw the cartoon.
Everyone knows the first one, only the second was in doubt. Though I should have got that second one too, I just haven't seen enough of him for it to click.
Maybe he'll review your stuff sometime.

Dolly Madison who use to be a sponsor of the Charlie Brown specials! :D Do they have other treats on other pencils? Also very cute cartoon. Hope we get to see at lease a few more of them with The Popples! :D

Yup! Though there is a subtle difference in that the Hostess Dolly Madison label is somehow not to be confused with that used by the Schulze Baking Company ...despite Schulze being purchased by Interstate/Hostess.
It's a strange thing. ^^

I miss Popples. I remember when there was a cartoon, decades ago. Think it was in the morning, and probably Saturday. Excellent comic, even if it's later than the series I knew. I'd no idea there would be more than one advertisement on a pencil, but it makes sense if the pencil was printed by a large company with many items.

I was born in 81, so I had opportunity to bear witness to many cartoons as they appeared on TV.
I was aware of Popples back then (86, 87, and 88), but I don't think I saw many episodes of the show. One was for the reason you mentioned: it was a Saturday-morning series. Being on for only once a week, coupled with the fact I had (and was very interested in) The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, meant I was likely to forget about or simply not be concerned with shows on other channels (exceptions were made for PBS and USA, but mostly I stuck to the aforementioned channels). Rambling on, I don't remember what channel would have shown the popples... I know there was a station that showed GI Joe, Punky Brewster, etc---Popples would likely have been on whatever channel that was, but I won't remember, and it wouldn't matter if I did (I should probably buy an 80s TV Guide from eBay---I did buy a 1991 issue not too long ago, to see the Nickelodeon schedule, but ...ok, ramble over). lol
Anyway, as I said, I was somehow aware of the popples as characters/things that existed back then. I remember I liked Puzzle, and I was aware that a 'soccer popple' (Big Kick) existed---I even remember wanting one, but not enough to convince my parents to buy it. ^^ So instead of popples, I grew up (in part) with the care bears, as Disney would show them twice a day for several years. ^^
EDIT: and yes, pencils can show and do many things ^_^

I was hatched right around you were. Kinda funny how that technically makes me a 70's baby. Same rationale as anyone born in '87 was a 90's baby. Ah, the finer shades of gray. Didn't get Nickelodeon or Dizney when I was young. Some friends did, so I saw a few shows. Think GI Joe was network, and there was PBS and a few things burried deep in my memory. Super Mario Brothers Super Show (LoZ on Fridays!) was also network. I'd look into some antique TV Guides, but I've found more connections chatting with people who also remember. Dizney showed Care Bears? I remember some of the series, and I have two of the movies (missing Care Bears In Wonderland), but I know they've been remade, like so many other 'toons from our era. My mother had a small collection of pencils. I thought it was a misprint, but it was a rainbow-shaded pencil with the words I ♥ TMOS

Care Bears have a timeless quality to them that keeps them around. That said, I don't care much for the new series, though I've liked one or two of the songs. :3
The Mike O'Meara Show?

Yeah. Care Bears was a pretty good idea from the card-makers in Ohio. Some of the songs are still in my head, too, which is almost funny when they just start playing while I'm trying to DO something. Isn't that O-Meara Show a podcast?

OH, I never thought to do that. That and a million other things I've meant to look up. The pencils in question are from the early to mid 1980s. And you're right about that Care Bears post; the music was the only reason to watch. Carole King wrote the theme to the first film! Cute pencil, too. Think I had one of those, way back.
