Sai and CSP

Up until recently I've been using Photoshop for my drawing and painting. However, after consultation with some other artists, I've begun to explore different solutions. Namely Paint Tool Sai and Clip Studio Paint.

The difference in the line work alone is extraordinary. The pen/ink tool in Sai and CSP allow for much greater articulation of line width and expression than anything I could do previously. It enables me to do far better line work. And the line stability tool reduces jitter and makes longer lines and curves so much easier. All of that, coupled with setting the undo/redo keyboard shortcuts to something my right hand can use as I draw (with my left), and it has opened up a whole new world of creative potential to me! It's very exciting.

I have several folders of old paper drawings I scanned in from 2012/2013 that I can complete, but I'm also doing completely new art.

These are wonderful times of adventure.

I'd welcome communication with other artists, or even just fans.
I have Telegram and Discord.

I tried CSP and it was like walking straight into a wall. Got any tips for starting up with it?

It can be daunting at first if you're not used to the interface.  I didn't have much trouble with it, because it is similar in style to the Photoshop interface.
If you're just starting out with art software like CSP then it's really worth the effort to learn it.  There are a lot of things that you can do to make it easier.  I'd be happy to chat with you about it.  I have Telegram, Discord and I think I still have Skype, or we could e-mail.  Whatever you like.

My first recommendation is to look on YouTube for beginner's tutorials.  There are so many great ones out there.   It will seem boring perhaps, but go through the tutorials and they will teach you all the basic functions, and how to use the tools.  Experiment with them, just make some scrap images until you get used to all of the controls.

My second recommendation is to look in File->Shortcut Settings, and look at all the keyboard shortcuts for the different tools, and set them to buttons you feel comfortable with.  For example, I draw with my left hand, so I have put all of the tools, like blend, eraser, pencil, pen, brush, undo and redo, onto my Num pad on the right side of the keyboard.  That way I can instantly undo/redo or switch to any tool without putting down my tablet pen.  It has completely changed the game for me with my art.

The third and final recommendation is just to play with it.  Set aside an hour a day and make new scrap images, experiment with all of the different tools, learn what everything does by trying it all out, until you feel comfortable with where everything is and how to use it.  Digital media will completely transform your art into something new and amazing if you just stick with it, make the effort and it'll reward you beyond your imagination.
