Dead Island 2 SoLA DLC: Tone of cutscenes

SPOILERS ahead for Dead Island 2 SoLA DLC! Less on overall story beats and gameplay and more talking about tone and feel. The DLC itself was awesome even if the story beats still weren't enough for me.

The tone of the cutscenes is a minor thing compared to the gameplay which I still think is stellar, but I haven't seen ANYONE talk about it, so I guess it didn't stand out to others the same way it did for me. The big thing I didn't like about the SoLA DLC for Dead Island 2 was how all of the zombie reveals and big moments were done in third person. It felt so radically different from the rest of the game, and not in a good way for me.

The game keeps you in first person no matter what, and the only time we ever got a third person shot was the end of the main game. It felt appropriate.

But the SoLA DLC LOVES to put cutscenes in third person, and I didn't like that. It removed a lot of the impact of those moments for me.

I know most games do this, but the thing is, this one didn't. Not in its main campaign, anyway. I'm playing as a character as much as I AM that character. Having the perspective stick to first person helps to drive home the fact that I am the character and am experiencing what they are. The sudden camera shift to third person let me see my character's reaction, sure, but it made me feel disconnected from the event. It was no longer happening to ME. It was only happening to THEM. And I didn't care for that tonal change. I really, really wish they had kept the reveals and action of cutscenes to first person. It would have been so much better.

Overall, this is a relatively minor gripe as the gameplay was still a lot of fun, and the new zombies they added actually mixed up the gameplay quite well. But tone and mood are two points that resonate hard with me in media, and I didn't like how the cutscenes took me as a player out of the equation
