People that buys adopts, a question?

What do you look for in an adopt character?

I've asked this a couple times along the years, I've never got a solid answer that makes it "click" for me.
I've always wondered if I -could- make adoptables, not like it's a high priority, but sounds interesting to make a char for someone else to use...

I mean, some buyers have paid me a bit extra to design a character from scratch just with general ideas, and it's been REALLY fun XD

So I do wonder what people like on the adopts and why they get them! :3

For me I really like designs I can visualize easily, since I write and doodle (poorly) a lot and more simplistic but still unique designs are my favorites. It makes it easier to translate into words as well, like "freckled brown furred fox" vs "red and black and yellow and blue fox with 3 tattoos" lol.

My adopts are typically used as sort of a pool of ideas I can take from to do other things, like "I want to write a m/f story so I'll just grab these 2 because they'd look cute together". Basically like a repository for ideas and concepts ^^

I think it is all depending on the person and what there are looking for at the time, I personally like adopting characters with a theme or simple design concept, as someone that made plenty of adopts on DeviantArt years ago i find making simple designs at least are more likely to be adopted since there easier to adapt/edit to the person's interests and needs, from all the amazing adopt artist i seen, they tend to make adopts either in bulks or one at a time depending on there own styles, I feel with your distinked art style you be in good demand with adopts your art style is cute and noticeable, i suggest using some simple designs and try a whole bunch of ideas to see what people are interested in, it all about time and developing designs to match your general audiences tastes, you could also just think outside the box and draw a few sketches and pick just one to design a single detailed adopt and auction it off, just depends on how much time you want to put in to this idea, would i feel like canines and chibi style adopts would be interesting to see, i love your art style and would love to adopt a design by you at some point, though this is just my oppion and with my situation i mostly did adopt for free and for points when i was on DeviantArt, i want to make adopts again and try to sell them, your question definitely made me think about it, most adopts tend to be either original species or common species like dogs and cats , just depends on if your art style and design finds it to the right audience

For me its usually ive already got an idea for a character in mind. And the adopt happens to git in with that idea well enough! But in terms of design I tend to like more "plain" designs but cute/unique enough to stand out a bit

There have been some times in the past where I've adopted a character.  More or less, I'm "buying" the artwork that an artist has already done, with the knowledge that I can draw the character myself as many times as I want without needing permission.  I do it just because it's fun, and I like throwing a few bucks to people for them to enjoy their hobby.

A lot of originality in the character design isn't that important to me, but then, most of my own original characters are fairly mundane in looks.  I like nice clothing and a few personality quirks, and maybe a few props, like a favorite coffee mug or a nice pair of glasses.

However, I don't do that anymore.  A decade ago, artists were offering adopts for $5 a pop or so, and back then it was all in good fun.  Now, I see artists cranking out adopts at $100- $250 each and I just wonder to myself, "Who is buying this crap?"  My guess is that nobody is buying.  Artists just draw random personal stuff, and figure they can put a price tag on it and see if it sells.  I seriously doubt any of it does.  If artists post regular updates on which of their adopts have sold out, I have a strong suspicion they are lying to create a false sense of urgency.

Adopts make sense if they are cheap.  If I have no input on the character design, I don't expect to pay much.  Ultimately, I find it hard to believe they are profitable, so... don't get your hopes up to sell a lot of these.

Neh, I wouldn't do those to be profitable. Those I'd do 'cause it'd be fun.
I wouldn't charge much more than a single-char pic, since that's the ammount of effort I'd put on it besides creating them XD

I'm mostly asking out of curiosity, since I'm the kind of guy that has -A- character, not a collection of them... so I wonder how it works for those who like to have many.

I have seen adopt designs I really liked, so I can see why some people would be interested in buying them. But I have not seen much use in them, since I prefer/enjoy designing characters myself.

Same, but I tend not to have a -reason- to design them.
Now I'll force myself to do some for the game mock-up I wanna do though XD
