Pronouncing my Name

by
Seems like I see it a lot: hints that people don't know exactly how to say my name.  I've heard "tal-er" and "tail-er" as well as "tal-ear" (which is close).

But the proper way to say it is as follows:  "Tal-lair"

The 'e' and 'i' produce the diphthong 'ey' as in 'weigh', add the 'r' and you get 'eyr' which sounds a lot like 'air' when you try to pronounce it.  The 'l' sound blends the vowel 'a' into the diphthong, meaning there is no hard break between sounds.  It should just roll off your tongue, like any good name.

So, if you were curious, there you go!

umm... it seemed obvious from the beginning really... ^.^
strange prononciations must be due to many different nationalities and languages present in the fandom..

It is a name meant to sound foreign, and maybe a few people think it has to have some sort of off-english pronunciation, but it uses perfectly normal English phonetics.

And, to be clear, this wasn't really irritating to me, but it happens enough that I thought I oughtta say something.

Well, it's very likely as mine)) At one country they call me right, at the other they'll say it anyway, but never not right! XD

It's quite simple.  When I first saw her name I instantly pronounced it Tale-ir in my head.
I don't claim to speak or write perfect English.  In fact, I claim the opposite, largely in part because I'm American which is quite different from the Queen's English in both written and spoken word.

But Taleir's name happens to be one where it can be spoken six different ways because of how many dialects of the English language there are.

This is true and also one of the horrible problems with English, especially for new, non-native speakers.  It is why I don't hold it against anyone who mis-pronounces it.

Besides, I chose the name because it isn't an English name.  Its a Vulpine name!  ...at least that's what I tell myself.  It is supposed to look sorta foreign and so sometimes even native English speakers will think they have to try some sort of foreign sounding phonetics to pronounce it.

If 'Taleir' is a name of this world, I have no idea to what culture it belongs.  :P

I was actually saying it (well, thinking it) as "tie-ear". I know, it's a hell of a stretch, I just thought it seemed exotic and mysterious that way. :)

I've been pronouncing it 'Ta-lear', personally, but I like how 'Ta-leyr' or 'Tal-eyr' reminds me of the Pern series - should make it easier for me to remember that pronunciation in the future.

When I first saw you page I was wondering how to pronounce your name.  So how did you choose your characters name?

It's essentially just random sound association.  It's a name that I thought fit the phonetics of what I thought my fox species' native language would sound like.
