You wake up in a hospital room, having volunteered for an experiment that claims to be able to make real life furries using the latest in genetic engineering methods. They gave you an injection before you settled down to sleep, saying that it wasn't their formula, but it was necessary before they administer it. There didn't seem to be any effects from what they gave you. They only told you that you are free to explore their lab as you see fit. They feel it is more natural for their subjects to choose what they transform into on their own. As you open the door and leave the room, you confirm what they told you that there will be signs to direct you towards the areas that they have set up to test the various kinds of animal hybrids they have prepared. First, you have to head down a hallway lined with doors to the rooms of the other test subjects. Then, you enter a sort of hub with a sign in the middle indicating what the multiple openings around the room lead to.
Greenhouse 1, a forest environment
Greenhouse 2, a plains environment
Greenhouse 3, which is moderately forested, but also contains steep cliffs
River
Wetlands
Aquarium, a vast pool lined on the bottom with sea plants or reefs. Some areas are cold and have ice blocks or small snow covered islands on top.
Desert
Cave and Tunnel, a labyrinth of corridors lined in rocks and sand.
Each of the environments has an open area at it's entrance, containing one table with various vials on it, each labeled with a different animal suited to the environment. Along with them is a paper instructing you to take only one vial. Taking more than one can result in adverse effects that can be fatal or debilitating.
While each of the environments is faithful to what they're emulating, it appears that exploration rewards you with a second vial suited to the animal that can perform the tasks necessary to reach it. Failure to reach a vial leads to the transformation brought upon by one of the vials at the entrance to wear off after some time.
It is revealed that the first injection to you was in fact a set of antibodies designed to eradicate the virus used to transcribe the genetic modifications into your DNA. This was done for safety purposes and to allow the subject to leave the experiment after the first dose if they desired. The second dose, however, is immune to the antibodies, and thus makes the transformation permanent. Anyone reaching that point has pretty much earned it, and they will probably want to keep their transformation anyway. As a failsafe, however, they can administer a stronger set of antibodies to reverse the effects of the second dose, and allow you to remain human.
Along the way, you can encounter other subjects that you can either use the environment at hand to escape their pursuit of you, or you can guide them towards a vial, and thus befriend them.
Awaiting somewhere in the environments, however, is something that you did not expect: a furry possessing the traits of more than one animal other than a human. They are creatures of myth, although without the supernatural powers. Finding them makes them chase you through a set of puzzles to escape them. They seem unaffected by the presence of a vial, though.
These mythical creatures are in fact scientists that subjected themselves to the most hazardous of their experiments: to take on animal traits that were already hybridized in order to make mythical furries. They avoided the adverse effects of taking more than one kind of their formula by having DNA samples that were already hybridized and using their method to transcribe it into their DNA. They now see themselves as the masters of a new furry race that they created, and thus, they run you through a sort of final test to see if you are worthy of the furry world they wish to create.
Win, and you will proceed to join the community of furries they create in the real world. If you befriended enough of the other subjects, you will instead escape the scientists and make a furry world on your own. They will be so impressed by your ingenuity that they will abandon their plans to allow a furry world to be established naturally. Mythical furries will then become an ordinary part of the furry world instead of being the unquestioned leaders. You can even become one if you so want.
