Sloan paused, catching his breath at the gap between the two large trees, their laden boughs hanging low enough that Sloan had to duck beneath several before he arrived at the gap. The crowded forest opened up before him, the hill sloping down before him until it reached the large steel mounds. The mounds were the graves of the old world, ancient structures somehow still opposing the oppressive march of time. Sloan could make out rusted pieces of the different structures sticking out from the ground, but time and nature had taken such a toll for they were more buried than standing.

From his discussions with the dwyvir merchants he'd crossed paths with earlier, the structures could reach high into the air, rivaling the tall mountains, and even then go almost as far down beneath the dirt. Sloan wondered what power it had taken to build such monuments. His eyes then wandered upwards to the bleeding moon above. It was said that the moon was once whole, but that when the old world ended, it shattered along side the calamity.

Sloan closed his eyes for a moment, the wolfkin trying to imagine the world before it was sundered. The tall structures rising magnificently in the sky, the sun glinting off their metal exterior. The moon would be whole, instead of raining occasional torrents of flaming rock upon the world. It must've been quite the sight.

He sighed, and then looked back down, his hand tightening around the haft of his halberd. Such thoughts were of little use, aside from idle curiosity. He still had a long way to go, and many such beasts had made the graves of the old world their home, and most were hostile rather than not. He had far to go. With a push of the halberd against the ground, Sloan pushed himself forward again, stepping over the roots of the tall, ancient tree. His adventure lay ahead, and only moving forward would bring it.

Sloan is one of my characters, and the star of a fantasy novel that I am slowly working on. He cannot be used without permission.
