It's okay, Rachel. There's always next time.

The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final ended this weekend, and while normally I don't pay any attention to sports, the fact that New Zealand was one of the co-hosts made it unavoidable, and I dare say I enjoyed what I saw. Rachel was less than impressed with the final, though. She can tolerate England losing, but losing to Spain is where she draws the line.

I'm sure she'll go out and sink a few Spanish ships later to get even.

Aw, poor Rachel. I never really pay attention to sports, either, except when the field lights from one of the local elementary schools shines in my bedroom window at night. (How they can see on the field when those suckers blind me from over a mile away, I dunno!) But there are still some times when even the least interested of us can take some pride in victories, or drown our sorrows after defeats. Especially when a bit of national pride is involved, too. So, sink away, cap'n. Just try not to dump 'em all on Ireland again, though.

I'm sure she could do with some hugs to make her feel better. The thing about her living in the early 18th century is that she'll have to wait about 250 years for England to win a world cup. She should be able to keep herself busy, though. What's to say she doesn't just sail to Spain and steal the cup off them? She's probably stolen enough Spanish gold to make her own, too. She might be a pirate, but she's a patriotic pirate at that.

Ireland's a long way from the West Indies, so they should be safe from cleaning up after her... but you never know with Rachel!

I'd be delighted to give her a hug any time. And maybe buy her a few more drinks, too! And hey, at least she's got something to look forward to, yeah?

As for stealing the cup, or making her own, I'm sure she could. But it's not quite the same as seeing your team win it legitimately, is it? Ah well. She still wins the prize for cutest mousie pirate! (And as for being a patriotic pirate, I believe the polite term was privateer!)

I remember going to an air show a long time ago.  There was a British a/c on static display and the pilot was standing next to it.  I noticed on his uniform the St. George cross flag.  Needless to say, I had to ask about it.  He said his squadron was stationed in Scotland and they wore the English flag to pester/aggravate the Scots nearby.  He had a big grin on his face as he said that.
