I'll switch to open source now that CowHammer is only a few years into development.

Did something happen with Unity? I didn't keep up with it, so I'm curious to know what happened.

Apparently, they wanted to charge developers per download, meaning even if you want to offer your game for free, you'd still have to pay them. I think they backed down after everyone raged, but I don't trust them.

Indeed, trust is a delicate thing - takes years to build and moments to break.

Yeah, that seems rough. I wouldn't put my trust with them either after they decided on something like this. Similar with what happened with the D&D situation earlier this year.

The thing with the D&D stuff last I checked ( have not looked in a while ) is yes they verbally backed off, but they never removed the words from the tos and such.

Even still, I don't trust them anymore and switched to Pathfinder 2e.

There were a handful of things the CEO announced, but that was what everyone latched onto the most as the worst idea.

Not to be the dumb one, but... what is CowHammer?

CowHammer is the title of a videogame I've been developing for some time.

You're right, it's time to go(dot) somewhere else. Even if they backpedal, trust is gone. I stopped supporting Unity after the sudden mass layoffs earlier this year.
It's also interesting to know that several members of Unity's board of directors, including the CEO, John Riccitiello himself, have sold a lot of their shares in the last couple weeks.
Also, they want to retroactively charge download fees for already existing games. I smell lawsuits coming. And I wonder what Microsoft is going to say about this.

=W= and right when I'm in the MIDDLE of re-learnign all I want, this happens. I may also need to just... move on to something else.
Each time I'm learning a new coding language/program, something happens XD

Welcome to team Godot! <3

It's a great engine.

I'm actually considering tutoring folks in programming, Godot, basic gamedev and design patterns. You're a professor and used to tutor, isn't that right? Do you have any advice for someone new to that?

Every professor has their own technique, so I can only share what works for me: be confident, prepare beforehand so you don't need to improvise and can lecture fluidly, and don't just explain stuff, prepare exercises to make your students work, so they can really understand what you're telling them. Programming is learned by doing, not just by listening or reading.

It's a dangerous and nasty situation because developers can be locked in a 5-year cycle, and if you're in year 3 and the pricing model suddenly changes and it's being applied retroactively, you may be forced to stick it out even though it will absolutely cripple you.  As mentioned in many places, if you're charged per download, there may be situations where you, the developer, are charged for users reinstalling their software, trial downloads, or people mass downloading as a form of protest or because they want to see the world burn, and the anti-fraud helpline they pledge is of little comfort.

There's also issues of games and programs for charities and schools where charging money is out of the question and hence just fall into the 'idiot developer' category that Unity's CEO so lovingly referred to such people as (way to knock the open source community).

Started to port my game to UE5
I feel sorry for all those devs that were close to release.

In my own experience, Unity was good for 2D games while Unreal is excellent for 3D. Godot seems like the go-to if your game is 2D?

lol i just decided if I ever do start making my stupid clicker game, I'll just do it in Unreal to make the most superfluous clicker game out there. But, since I'm incompetent, I'll likely actually just use Scratch instead.

i dont think anyone will trust unity ever again if they can just do all that BS on a whim and it changes things for even old games already made xD. its insane how fast they can speed run their company to ruin
