There's actually a very clear distinction between something being scary and something being terrifying. Scary things can sometimes be quite fun, as they tie with the center of the brain of surviving a thrilling experience. Terrifying things can trigger survival instinct. It's why kids will enjoy some horror films, while still being terrified by the small things that might even be harmless.
